The VP of Engineering at Mursion is responsible for mentoring and managing directors of engineering, engineering managers as well as software and testing engineers. The perfect candidate sees their team as their product. While they are technically credible and know the details of what engineers work on, their time is spent safeguarding their team’s health, hiring a world-class team, and putting them in the best position to succeed. They own the delivery of product commitments and are always looking to improve productivity. They must also coordinate across departments to accomplish collaborative goals. You will often be given ambiguous ill-defined problems with the implicit goal of gaining clarity and driving execution/direction.

Mursion is seeking a dynamic and experienced VP of Engineering to lead and mentor our engineering team. This role involves managing directors of engineering, engineering managers, and software and testing engineers. The ideal candidate views their team as their product and prioritizes their well-being and success. While technically proficient, the VP of Engineering focuses on team health, world-class hiring, and optimizing team performance. This role also includes ensuring the timely delivery of product commitments and driving continuous productivity improvements. Cross-departmental coordination to achieve collaborative goals is essential. You will tackle ambiguous, ill-defined problems, providing clarity and direction.

This is a full-time, fully-remote, salaried position reporting to the CTO.

The compensation package for this position includes an annual base salary range from $200K-$225K based on experience and location, as well as eligibility for company bonus and equity.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, mentor and support a highly effective team of passionate engineers fostering a high-performance culture
  • Promote a culture of creativity, collaboration, speed, innovation, and excellence, continuously elevating the quality of the engineering organization
  • Prioritize hiring efforts to focus on areas of most need and quickly recruit top engineering talent
  • Create, manage, and measure KPI’s such as velocity, estimation accuracy and defect percentages
  • Ensure that department achieves objectives and project completion within budget and time frame
  • Assist in training new engineers by leading technical courses
  • Participate in strategic planning meetings with product management, architecture and design
  • Contribute to technical engineering designs, resource management and implementations
  • Manage the delivery of software using Agile best practices
  • Solve complex software engineering tasks while maintaining coding standards and practices
  • Develop successful peer partnerships with other department leaders and cross-functional teams (Product Management, Sales, Marketing, etc.)
  • Provide a consistent/successful interface between Engineering Development and Product Management
  • Develop, measure, and manage key performance metrics for the team.
  • Drive high throughput and standardize the development process where needed
  • Work closely with the CEO and CTO on department wide initiatives

Requirements

  • Previous experience in software design and developing customer-oriented platforms
  • Demonstrated experience leading the design, development, delivery and maintenance of large-scale and high-performance platforms
  • Knowledge of release management and CI/CD deployment workflow processes, from development release through production deployment
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills with a proven ability to build productive cross-departmental relationships and motivate team members. Positive, can-do attitude and value collaboration a must.
  • Experience with object-oriented code, .Net, C#, Java, Javascript frameworks (React, Next.js)
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Strong organizational leadership skills
  • Extensive experience in working with stakeholders to create hiring strategies to develop quality teams
  • A well developed people management philosophy for managers and engineers
  • Experience managing managers
  • Agile project management skills
  • Commitment to understand, communicate and improve the quality of multiple teams
  • Demonstrate longevity at at least one recent job
  • Understanding of how to be successfully manage at a remote-only company
  • Experience working with offshore engineering teams
  • Humble, servant leader
  • Bonus: Experience with Unity, WebRTC, AI/ML, AWS

Education

  • BS, MS, MBA or Ph.D in Computer Science or related technical discipline
