At Instructure, we believe in the power of people to grow and succeed throughout their lives. Our goal is to amplify that power by creating intuitive products that simplify learning and personal development, facilitate meaningful relationships, and inspire people to go further in their education and careers.
We do this by giving smart, creative, passionate people opportunities to create awesome. And that's where you come in:

We're looking for an early career full-stack engineer to support development of modern web experiences and services used globally by partners, educators and learners. You'll work across the stack from elegant, accessible React UIs to sophisticated Rails APIs and distributed job systems. This person should be able to travel on occasion to meet with other team members in person.

What you will do:

  • Build and design production features in Rails, TypeScript, and React

  • Develop serverless/edge APIs and jobs on AWS (e.g., Lambda, API Gateway, S3/CloudFront, EventBridge/Queues).

  • Model data and ship performant Postgres queries (migrations, indexing, connection mgmt, query optimization).

  • Write with accessibility (WCAG aware UI) and testing (unit/integration/e2e) in mind

  • Participate in code reviews and CI/CD management

  • Collaborate with Product/Design and contribute to technical direction.

What you will need to know/have:

  • 1+ years of professional software engineering experience, ideally including time in TypeScript and Node.js.

  • Knowledge of AWS for serverless and edge patterns.

  • Familiarity with SQL (schema design, query tuning, migrations, understanding of transactions).

  • Experience with Rails: RESTful APIs, ActiveRecord, data modeling, and background job processing (Sidekiq or equivalent)

  • Strong testing discipline and experience with CI/CD pipelines (GitLab CI, GitHub Actions, Docker)

  • Excellent communication, product sense, and a bias for shipping.

It would be a bonus if you also had:

  • Experience with EdTech standards: LTI 1.3, OneRoster, Canvas LMS integrations, or FERPA/COPPA compliance

  • Exposure to modern frontend tools: Zustand, React Query, Instructure UI, RSBuild, or Biome linter

  • Security mindset (OAuth/SAML, SSO, PII handling, audit logging), plus familiarity with FERPA/GDPR implications in edtech.

  • Experience with analytics/feature flags and cost/perf tuning at scale.

Onsite Collaboration Requirement: This role requires working onsite on Tuesday and Wednesday, with Thursday strongly encouraged as part of our company’s in-person collaboration model.
